"Flamingo Spitting Out Gum" Original Painting
When we dreamt about our shop, we always knew that showcasing local art would be a part of the meaning behind our brand: Gifted. Being intentional about bringing gifted artists into our space would be as much a part of our mission as thoughtfully curated products that were made by gifted artisans, makers and brands.
This year, we have chosen local Fort Worth Artist, Katie McKay Jones, to showcase some pieces that will be sold exclusively at our shop. Given the hardships of 2020, we knew that her current work "Monsters" would resonate deeply with viewers who have struggled with reconciling with their own monsters and the monsters out in the world.
From the artist:
"My current work is a response to a lie I told my daughter: monsters aren't real. The more I convinced her, the more my paintings appeared wild and belligerent. I began to see monsters everywhere.
I have embraced these "monsters" and become more deliberate in creating them. For me, they represent life. They represent the constant noise of hatred and oppression, the inner struggle between right and wrong, the unwillingness to see and truly hear other people, and all the lies we choose to believe. They represent the brokenness in the world.
And yet in the loudness and chaos, there is beauty. There are bright, bold colors that compliment one another. There are lines that are naïve and playful. There are subtle textures and quietness in the details.
I want the viewers to get close to my paintings, to feel the tension between loud and quiet, chaos and peace, weakness and strength. I want the viewers to find beauty in the brokenness and feel empowered by it."
